And you can be one of its advocates!\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, Panama took a historic step for the planet: it passed the <\/span><b>Law on the Rights of Nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Recognizing that ecosystems have the legal right to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to exist, persist and regenerate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Recognizing that <\/span><b>Nature has rights<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It involves understanding that life is not an exclusive privilege of human beings. Rivers, forests, oceans, and the species that inhabit them also have the right to exist, regenerate, and fulfill their vital cycles without being destroyed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This principle stems from an ethical and ancestral vision: the view that the Earth is a being with its own value, not an inexhaustible source of resources. Just as human rights protect the dignity of individuals, so the Earth\u2019s rights protect the Earth itself. <\/span><b>Rights of Nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They seek to guarantee the dignity of ecosystems, because without them\u2014without water, without mangroves, without clean air\u2014there is no possible future for anyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that achievement, which seemed untouchable, faces a contradiction today. In the Chiriqu\u00ed Gulf, the Puerto Bar\u00fa port project threatens to violate the principles of the Law on the Rights of Nature. According to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Impact and Economic Valuation Report<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prepared by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/en\/press-release\/environmental-damage-report-puerto-baru\/\"><b>Lynker (2024, pp. 4\u201310)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, The construction of the port would involve dredging in the <\/span><b>Mangroves of David<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, The study warns that the access channel to the port would pass through mangrove areas under state jurisdiction, degrading essential habitats, releasing stored carbon, and <\/span><b>contradicting Panama's climate commitments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, These include reducing their emissions by 11.5 % by 2030 and restoring 50,000 hectares of mangroves by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faced with this threat, the campaign <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/en\/about-us\/\"><b>No To Puerto Bar\u00fa<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has brought together more than <\/span><b>60 organizations, scientists and environmental leaders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, alongside the support of civil society, <\/span><b>#NoaPuertoBar\u00fa <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is more than a coalition; it is a movement that grows daily in the protection of the environment, a voice in defense of nature. <\/span><b>in <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defense of the country's environmental coherence. By appealing to Chiriqu\u00ed to have a port and with it the desired progress of the region in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/en\/articles-2\/panama-port-relocation-environmental-threat\/\"><b>Puerto Armuelles<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a site with existing infrastructure and less of an ecological impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This struggle goes beyond a single port: it is a defense of life. <\/span><b>mangroves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They are the guardians of the climate and coastal life. They store four times more carbon than tropical forests, support local economies, and represent one of Panama's greatest contributions to the balance of the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protecting the mangroves is not stopping development: it is <\/span><b>Re-defining it from an ecological perspective<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
