The defence of the David mangroves adds a new chapter, this time from the citizenry and before the courts. <\/b>On the 15th of September, members of the <\/span>Coalition of Citizens in Defence of the Mangroves<\/b> they went to the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of Panama to deliver a citizen letter requesting a review of the environmental legality of the Puerto Bar\u00fa project in David.<\/span><\/p>\n

The letter, backed by <\/span>163 citizens<\/b>, request the <\/span>nullity of the resolution that approved the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for Puerto Bar\u00fa<\/b> and the adoption of <\/span>urgent interim measures<\/b> while the merits of the legal proceedings are being resolved. Among these, a halt to any clearing or construction work that could affect the protected area is requested.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the damage can be irreversible, prevention matters<\/b><\/h3>\n

The citizen call once again brings to the centre <\/span>what would happen when an infrastructure project is installed in an ecosystem whose loss cannot simply be compensated for afterwards.<\/b><\/p>\n

Puerto Bar\u00fa includes the construction of port infrastructure and a navigation channel that could cut through a protected mangrove area. An independent analysis of its impacts warns that construction and dredging activities could affect these ecosystems, release stored carbon, increase vulnerability to erosion and climate disasters, and impact biodiversity and water flows.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is not just about trees<\/b><\/h3>\n

Mangroves are much more than the scenery we see above the surface; they are natural barriers against erosion and extreme events, they store large amounts of carbon and they sustain activities such as fishing and tourism. Panama has more than 165,000 hectares of mangroves, with approximately 85% located on its Pacific coast.<\/span><\/p>\n

Research carried out in Bah\u00eda de Los Muertos and Punta Boca Brava identified <\/span>209 bottlenose dolphins<\/b>, of which 53 were classified as residents. Furthermore, 65% of the sightings corresponded to feeding activities, indicating that the area constitutes an important foraging zone for this population.<\/span><\/p>\n

163 people who decided to take action<\/b><\/h3>\n

This letter also talks about something bigger and it is <\/span>the right of citizens to participate in decisions that can transform their area. <\/b>This is not the first action seeking to bring environmental concerns regarding Puerto Bar\u00fa before the institutions. The campaign strategy itself has positioned the legal route and the raising of awareness of these processes as part of the defence of the mangroves of David.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now it is up to the Third Chamber to consider what has been raised by the citizens; today 163 citizens decided not to wait. They decided to turn to the courts to request that, before moving forward, a review is carried out; before intervening, prevention is applied; and before it is too late, <\/span>the mangroves of David are protected.<\/b><\/p>\n

Because what isn't replaced is protected<\/b><\/p>\n
