The ocean begins long before reaching the sea, it begins in the rivers that flow into it, in the wetlands that filter the water and in the mangroves that grow right in that extraordinary territory where the land and the sea meet.<\/span><\/p>\n

During September, Panama commemorates the <\/span>Ocean Month<\/b>, an opportunity to remember something that we often forget: we live on a planet deeply connected by water and our lives depend on the health of its ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\n

The oceans cover more than 70% of the planet\u2019s surface, help regulate the climate, produce much of the oxygen we breathe and support an extraordinary diversity of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

For generations we have acted as if they were an inexhaustible source of resources. As if everything could be extracted, as if everything could receive our waste, as if it had no limits.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ocean is much more than water<\/b><\/h2>\n

Our oceans are a source of <\/span>life, food and wellbeing for millions of people<\/b>. Coastal communities, fishers, local economies and entire ecosystems depend on them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, protecting them doesn't just mean reducing the plastics that reach the sea or creating marine protected areas, it means understanding the connections that allow the ocean to remain alive.<\/span><\/p>\n

reefs, seagrasses, rivers, wetlands and <\/span>mangroves<\/b> they are part of the same system. Because what happens in one of them can end up affecting all the others. In Panama, that connection exists, can be observed in an extraordinary way and is called the Mangroves of David.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mangroves of David where the land protects the ocean<\/b><\/h2>\n

In Chiriqu\u00ed, the <\/span>Mangroves of David<\/b> they form one of Panama's most valuable coastal ecosystems. Here, the forest and the ocean practically speak the same language.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mangroves filter water, retain sediment, store carbon, protect coastlines and act as natural nurseries for fish, crustaceans and other species that subsequently inhabit marine environments.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is also a significant population of <\/span>bottlenose dolphins<\/b> in Bah\u00eda de Los Muertos and Punta Boca Brava. Research carried out in the area identified 209 individuals and found that the <\/span>65% of the sightings were related to feeding activities<\/b>, showing the importance of this estuary as a foraging area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Protecting these mangroves, therefore, does not just mean protecting a forest, it means protecting the ocean from its roots.<\/span><\/p>\n

An ocean also needs boundaries<\/b><\/h2>\n

But the <\/span>Mangroves of David<\/b> face the potential transformation of their environment by the project <\/span>Puerto Baru<\/b>. The ocean needs limits; for a long time we have understood nature by what it provides us, but there is another way of relating to it. It is important to stop considering nature solely as a property or a resource and to begin recognising its right to <\/span>exist, persist and regenerate their life cycles<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

If a company can have legal personality and representation before the courts, then this legal protection should also apply to the rivers, forests or oceans that make all human and economic activity possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recognising the rights of nature means understanding that protecting an ecosystem should not depend solely on the economic value we can assign to it.<\/span><\/p>\n

This Ocean Month recognises that\u2026<\/b><\/h2>\n

Looking after our seas also means protecting the rivers that flow into them, the mangroves that embrace their coasts, the species that depend on their waters and the communities that have built their lives by the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

This <\/span>Ocean Month in Panama<\/b> it is an opportunity to look beyond the horizon and understand that everything is connected. <\/span>Why defending mangroves is also defending the ocean.<\/b><\/p>\n
