2024: an initial alert regarding mangroves<\/b><\/p>\n In 2024, the Ministry of Environment (previous government) presented a proposal to modify the boundaries of the Alanje, David and San Lorenzo Mangroves. Environmental organisations submitted observations and warned that the proposal could imply a reduction of <\/span>more than 11,600 hectares of the protected area<\/b>, including land and marine areas.<\/span><\/p>\n That same year, with the change of government and the arrival of <\/span>Juan Carlos Navarro<\/b> to the Ministry of Environment, the proposal was stopped before being published in the Official Gazette. It seemed that the discussion was over, unfortunately it was not.<\/span><\/p>\n 2026: the limits are once again up for debate<\/b> In 2026 we have a new proposal but also a new opportunity to look closely. Protecting mangroves does not mean opposing development, it means demanding that decisions regarding the land consider the environmental, social and economic value of ecosystems that took centuries to form.<\/span><\/p>\n Much more than trees: the value of the David Mangroves<\/b><\/p>\n The <\/span>Manglares de David, in Chiriqu\u00ed<\/b>, are much more than trees growing between the ocean and the land. Here you will find <\/span>11 of the 12 mangrove species present in Panama<\/b> and some of these trees reach up to <\/span>50.9 metres high<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n Puerto Bar\u00fa is also part of this conversation<\/b><\/p>\n The discussion takes on even greater relevance in light of the project <\/span>Puerto Bar\u00fa, in David, Chiriqu\u00ed<\/b>, which has caused concern regarding its potential impacts on the mangroves and the natural processes that sustain this ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n The future of Puerto Bar\u00fa and the future of the David Mangroves cannot be analysed as completely separate conversations. <\/span>The observations made at the time warned of a possible reduction of the protected area and its consequences for terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Fortunately, the proposal did not ultimately go ahead, but, two years later, the boundaries of the <\/span>Chiriqu\u00ed mangroves<\/b> are back on the table.<\/span>

\n<\/b>In July 2026, the Ministry of Environment opened this new public consultation and, with it, some of the questions that had already arisen two years earlier returned: Which territories are included? Which are left out? What scientific criteria justify the new boundaries? And what consequences could these changes have for one of Panama\u2019s most important coastal ecosystems? The current proposal could reduce the protected area of the Chiriqu\u00ed mangroves by more than 9,000 hectares, specifically in Alanje, David and San Lorenzo.<\/span><\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manglares-de-david-chiriqui-panama.jpg\")

\n<\/span>Mangroves sustain biodiversity, contribute to local economies, protect coastlines, and help reduce the impact of floods and other extreme events. That is why modifying the limits of their protection deserves an informed, transparent discussion based on scientific evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n
