Real stories, science, photography and citizen science came together in Panama City to remind us that understanding the importance of mangroves is the first step and that protecting them also requires action.<\/b><\/p>\n

Last Saturday <\/span>8 August<\/b>, Panama City was the setting for a gathering dedicated to looking at mangroves through the eyes of those who know them best: the people who live, work, research, educate and build their lives around these ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the event, a screening was held<\/span> three-part special of the documentary series based on the<\/b> Restor scientific report<\/b><\/a> about the mangroves of David<\/b>, bringing to the screen the human stories that exist behind the data.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because behind every figure on biodiversity, carbon, coastal protection or conservation there are people and communities that live daily with the mangroves of Chiriqu\u00ed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The stories behind the science<\/b><\/h2>\n

Documentaries made it possible to approach mangroves from a different perspective, not only as an ecosystem that we must conserve, but as a living territory that connects nature, knowledge, and communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through its protagonists, we met people who work to understand, care for and share the value of these ecosystems. The meeting also opened a conversation about the importance of <\/span>Chiriqu\u00ed mangroves for Panama and the world<\/b>, transforming scientific information into stories capable of bringing us closer to what is at stake when we talk about <\/span>protection of mangroves<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking at a mangrove can also be a way of protecting it<\/b><\/h2>\n

The experience didn't end on the screen; the space also became a small gallery featuring a selection of <\/span>12 winning photographs of<\/b> Mangrove Photography Awards<\/b><\/a>, an initiative by the Mangrove Action Project that documents the extraordinary biodiversity, beauty and relationship between communities and mangroves around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

The images made it possible to journey through other mangroves around the world and recognise something that must always be kept in mind: all mangroves are part of the same story of biodiversity, communities and resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Science, photography and documentary thus came together in a single experience to help us understand why protecting mangroves matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

But simply being aware of the problem is not enough<\/b><\/h2>\n

The event also had a very specific objective <\/span>moving from knowledge to action<\/b>. Currently, the Ministry of Environment of Panama keeps open a <\/span>public consultation on the proposal for the Mangroves of Alanje, David and San Lorenzo Managed Resource Area<\/b>, in Chiriqu\u00ed.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is why, during the meeting,<\/span> CIAM<\/span><\/a> He explained to those present how a public consultation works and why citizen participation is a tool for submitting comments and observations to the authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Attendees were able to learn about the proposal, resolve queries and participate directly by submitting their observations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many voices were added to the public consultation<\/b><\/h2>\n

Upon completion of the activity, <\/span>they collected signatures and comments<\/b>, which were formally submitted to the Ministry of Environment as part of the public consultation process. Each signature represents a person who decided to transform what they learned during the event into participation.<\/span><\/p>\n

La <\/span>protection of mangroves<\/b> it does not happen solely through scientific research, campaigns or actions by environmental organisations. It also happens when citizens inform themselves, ask questions, participate and use the mechanisms available to make their voices heard.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mangroves need our voice<\/b><\/h2>\n

Mangroves are much more than the trees we see above the water. They are connected systems where forests, tides, channels, sediments, biodiversity and communities interact.<\/span><\/p>\n

The events of 8 August reminded us that <\/span>science gives us evidence, stories allow us to connect and citizen participation can transform that knowledge into action<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The public consultation remains open until <\/span>14 August 2026<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is still time to take part.<\/span><\/p>\n
