There are places where the earth ends and others where everything begins; mangroves belong to this second category. Mangroves are where freshwater embraces the ocean, where thousands of species find refuge, where coastlines withstand storms, and where the planet stores part of the memory of its climate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every 26th July, the world commemorates the <\/span>International Day for the Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystems<\/b>, a date designated by UNESCO in 2015 to highlight the fact that these ecosystems, although they account for less than 1% of the world\u2019s tropical forests, support a disproportionately large share of life on Earth.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The date also honours those who have dedicated their lives to protecting them, and was chosen in memory of Ecuadorian activist Hayhow Daniel Nanoto, who died on 26 July 1998 while participating in a mobilisation to restore the mangroves of Muisne, Ecuador.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their story reminds us that conserving mangroves has never been solely an environmental task; it is also an act of commitment to communities, to the future, and to generations yet to be born.<\/span><\/p>\n

A forest that makes the invisible visible<\/b><\/h2>\n

Mangroves are extraordinary because they perform some of the planet's most important jobs without making a sound. They protect coastlines from erosion and storm surges, filter water, and are natural nurseries where fish, crustaceans, and molluscs grow, which in turn support small-scale fishing.<\/span><\/p>\n

They capture enormous amounts of carbon and help to slow down climate change, while also providing food, work and protection to millions of people around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

When a mangrove disappears, we don't just lose trees, we lose a whole system that sustains life.<\/span><\/p>\n

The David Mangroves: one of Panama's natural treasures<\/b><\/h2>\n

On the Pacific coast of Panama, there is a place that defies world statistics. While much of the planet's forests continue to degrade, the <\/span>Mangroves of David<\/b> They have retained more than 98% of their cover for decades and are home to some of the tallest mangroves recorded on the planet, reaching heights of up to <\/span>50.9 metres high<\/b>. Also, they store around <\/span>14.5 million tonnes of carbon<\/b>, nearly a quarter of Panama's blue carbon.<\/span><\/p>\n

The David Mangroves are a place where biodiversity still has room to thrive, with a value that goes far beyond mere figures; this forest is home to birds, fish, sea turtles and a resident population of bottlenose dolphins that use Los Muertos Bay as one of their main feeding grounds. Research carried out between April and September 2023 identified 209 dolphins, of which 53 are permanent residents. Furthermore, 65% of the recorded sightings involved feeding behaviour, confirming the ecological importance of this estuary for the species.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is at risk<\/b><\/h2>\n

Today this ecosystem faces a threat; the construction of the Puerto Bar\u00fa project includes a navigation channel that would require dredging within the estuary. Various studies warn that this type of work could alter natural sedimentation patterns, change water flow, affect the habitats of numerous species and degrade fundamental ecosystem services.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the case of dolphins, scientific evidence indicates that increased underwater noise, maritime traffic, and dredging can alter their behaviour, reduce their feeding grounds, and even cause the displacement of resident populations. Precisely for this reason, the study conducted in Bah\u00eda de Los Muertos was conceived as a baseline to understand the current state of this population before any significant transformation of the ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n

That's why talking about mangroves is no longer just talking about trees; it's talking about decisions on what kind of development we want to build and how much we are willing to lose before we understand the true value of nature.<\/span><\/p>\n

Protecting a mangrove forest is protecting much more than just a wood.<\/b><\/h2>\n

When a mangrove forest stands, life continues to find a place to begin. This July 26th, the best tribute is to act. International Day for the Conservation of Mangroves is not just a date to celebrate, it is an invitation to look at these forests with different eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

To understand that what appears immobile silently sustains our daily lives. Because mangroves don't need us to speak for them, they need us to listen to them.<\/span><\/p>\n
