Fishermen, tour guides, scientists and communities in Chiriqu\u00ed have coexisted for generations with one of Panama\u2019s most extraordinary ecosystems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today that conversation has crossed borders; more and more researchers, environmental organisations, opinion leaders and international institutions are speaking about this mangrove forest. They speak of it because it represents one of the most valuable and best-preserved coastal ecosystems on the planet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A forest that defies the global trend\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We live in an age in which forests are disappearing at an alarming rate; it is estimated that 82% of the world\u2019s forests are already showing some degree of degradation as a result of deforestation, land-use change and climate change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there is an exception on Panama\u2019s Pacific coast: after decades, the David Mangroves have lost less than 2% of their cover. This is an extraordinary figure, making them one of the best-preserved mangrove forests in the country and a model of resilience for the world. Whilst other ecosystems are in decline, this forest demonstrates that nature can still hold its own when the right conditions are in place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The silent giants of Panama\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we think of mangroves, we usually imagine low-lying trees growing by the sea; the David Mangroves completely defy that image. Here grow some of the tallest mangroves recorded on the planet, reaching up to 50.9 metres in height.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are true natural cathedrals that have stood for centuries, adapting to the tides, storing life, and sustaining a unique ecosystem. Each of these giants is the result of hundreds of years of balance between the ocean, the rivers, and the land.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A natural vault against climate change\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The greatest wealth of this forest is not always visible; beneath the water and muddy soil lies one of Panama's largest natural carbon deposits. For thousands of years, the David mangroves have captured carbon dioxide and stored it in their roots and sediments, preventing it from reaching the atmosphere and contributing to global warming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, they store 14.5 million tonnes of carbon, equivalent to almost a quarter of the country's total blue carbon. In other words, these mangroves function as an enormous natural vault that helps regulate the planet's climate. Protecting them means keeping that carbon where it has remained for centuries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Natural infrastructure that protects people\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mangroves not only protect biodiversity, they also protect lives. They act as a natural shield against storms and floods, absorbing the force of the waves and significantly reducing the impact on coastal communities. Studies show that, with intact mangroves, economic losses from flooding amount to around one million dollars a year. Without them, such losses could rise to 18 million dollars \u2013 an increase of nearly 1700%. A home for hundreds of species<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mangroves of David are much more than a forest; they are a sanctuary for fish, crustaceans, migratory birds, reptiles, and marine mammals that depend on this ecosystem for survival. Each species is part of a web of life that also sustains activities vital for local communities, such as artisanal fishing, nature tourism, and the coastal economy. A recognition that confirms their global importance The relevance of the Mangroves of David is no longer just a perception of those who know this territory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, <\/span><b>This ecosystem was recognised as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as a designation awarded to the most important places on the planet for biodiversity conservation. This recognition means that scientists and international organisations have identified the David Mangroves as a critical site for maintaining species, ecological processes, and essential environmental services. Scientific evidence that what happens here has implications that transcend Panama's borders. A story that belongs to us all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mangroves of David remind us that some places sustain far more than we see. They store carbon, protect communities, reduce flooding, support local economies, and, among other benefits, provide shelter for hundreds of species.
