Just as she learned from her grandparents, we learned from her.\u00bb<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Knowledge that is inherited<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many families in Chiriqu\u00ed, the mangrove is not just a landscape, it's part of their family history. From a young age, the Bernal sisters would accompany their grandmother to the mangroves to learn how to collect shells. \u00abThey took us to the island from a very young age and thanks to her, we know how to gather shells.\u00bb <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What appears to be an everyday gesture represents tradition, culture, and a relationship with the territory built over generations, where mangroves are the ecosystem that allows ways of life to be preserved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Generations Rooted | The Bernal Family\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U1vkfUHzHek?start=2&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>The mangrove provides sustenance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a shared reality for numerous coastal communities in Panama: \u00abWe find our livelihood in the mangroves, because if we don't go out to collect shellfish, we have no salary, no sustenance.\u00bb This is because, for those who live by the mangrove, this ecosystem not only protects biodiversity but also sustains family economies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Valor_Climatico_y_Ecologico_Manglares_Chiriqui_Panama-F.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Climatic and Ecological Value of the threatened mangroves of Chiriqui Province, Panama <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0confirm this relationship where they highlight the <\/span><b>David's Mangroves <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commercial fisheries and contribute directly to the food security of local communities. Covering approximately <\/span><b>79,686 hectares, accounting for approximately 25% of all Panama\u2019s mangroves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>David's Mangroves: Much More Than Just Trees<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The human value these ecosystems hold sustains knowledge, crafts, and practices that are difficult to recover once they disappear. When an ecosystem is lost, so too is part of the collective memory of those who have lived in it for generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science confirms what communities have known for a long time: with intact mangroves, the number of people exposed to flooding significantly decreases. According to the report 'Climate and Ecological Value of Threatened Mangroves in the Province of Chiriqu\u00ed, Panama', without this ecosystem, up to <\/span><b>590 people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be affected by flooding. With the mangrove preserved, that figure is reduced to <\/span><b>41 people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Puerto Bar\u00fa and a decision about the future<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the <\/span><b>Mangroves of David<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continue to be recognised for their enormous ecological and social value, the project <\/span><b>Puerto Baru<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> raises questions about the potential impacts that an intervention of this magnitude could generate on this ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is just one story, and the Bernal family could be representative of many other families who have found their home and livelihood in the mangroves. Every lesson shared between grandparents, children, and grandchildren forms part of a heritage that doesn't appear on maps, but which sustains entire communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because protecting mangroves is also protecting those who have learned to live alongside them.
