But there is one species that connects all these ecosystems and whose story reminds us why protecting nature means protecting a complete web of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawksbill turtle<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawksbill turtle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is one of the most iconic marine species on the planet, it is also one of the most threatened and although it spends much of its life swimming among reefs, its history is deeply connected with the mangroves of Panama.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Reef Gardener<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hawksbill turtle plays a unique role in the ocean. Unlike other sea turtles, it feeds primarily on marine sponges, organisms that can grow on corals and compete with them for space and resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By naturally controlling these populations, you help maintain the ecological balance of coral reefs, allowing hundreds of other species to find shelter, food, and breeding grounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, many scientists consider the hawksbill turtle a true reef gardener. Just like fingerprints in humans, no two hawksbill turtles are exactly alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This feature allows researchers and conservationists to identify specific individuals during monitoring and tracking programmes, helping to better understand their migratory routes, habits, and threats. Each turtle carries its own story written on its shell.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Beauty can also be a threat<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For decades, the hawksbill turtle was hunted for a reason as simple as it was devastating: the beauty of its shell. Its characteristic amber and brown hues were used to make combs, jewellery, spectacles, ornaments and handicrafts traded in various parts of the world. This exploitation drove the species to the brink of collapse, and today, the hawksbill turtle is listed as critically endangered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Panama, the capture, sale, and use of hawksbill turtle products are prohibited by law, a fundamental measure for their conservation. However, threats continue. Habitat loss, pollution, and alterations to coastal ecosystems continue to put their survival at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Panama a haven for the hawksbill turtle<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panama is home to five of the world's seven species of sea turtles. Among these, the hawksbill turtle finds refuge in important ecosystems of Panamanian Pacific, especially in the Gulf of Chiriqu\u00ed region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Areas such as Chiriqu\u00ed Gulf Marine National Park and Coiba National Park are part of a network of essential habitats for its feeding, movement, and survival. These ecosystems do not function in isolation; coral reefs, mangroves, estuaries, and coastal zones form a single, connected ecological network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1591\" src=\"https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1-10x12.jpg 10w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>What happens in the mangroves also affects the hawksbill turtle.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mangroves of David, in Chiriqu\u00ed, constitute one of Panama's most important coastal ecosystems. These mangroves function as natural nurseries for fish and other marine species, filter sediments, store carbon, and help maintain the quality of coastal waters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, they form part of the ecological system connecting the estuaries, reefs, and protected marine areas of the Gulf of Chiriqu\u00ed. For this reason, concerns about projects that could alter these ecosystems extend beyond local borders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNESCO itself has requested a review of the potential indirect impacts that the Puerto Bar\u00fa project could generate on Coiba National Park, a site recognised as a Natural World Heritage Site. When we protect a reef, we also protect the species that depend on it.
