Beneath the roots of the David Mangroves in Chiriqu\u00ed, layers of carbon that took thousands of years to form have accumulated, their giant forests grew over entire generations, their channels, tides and sediments sustain such a complex balance that only small alterations can trigger irreversible changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is precisely to gauge the weight of this ecosystem that a new report on the Chiriqu\u00ed mangroves, by Restor and the Tropical Landscapes Climate Program, called Climatic and Ecological Value of the threatened mangroves of Chiriqui Province, Panama <\/b><\/a><\/span>shows us something much deeper and places us before one of the most intact and ecologically valuable coastal ecosystems still surviving on the American continent.<\/span><\/p>\n

With approximately 80,000 hectares, this territory not only represents a natural heritage for Panama, but is also a global climate asset. A true refuge for biodiversity, a natural shield against floods, and a critical carbon reserve for the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n

But it is also an extraordinarily fragile ecosystem. As the world loses forests and degrades ecosystems at an unprecedented rate, the Chiriqu\u00ed mangroves<\/strong> have remained stable for decades, with less than 2% of forest loss over the last twenty years. <\/span>Here survive some of the tallest mangroves recorded on the planet<\/strong>, true giants of over 50 metres, alongside endangered species, ecological corridors and natural processes that simply cannot be rebuilt once destroyed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Science never tires of repeating, with increasing clarity each time, that not everything that can be destroyed can be recovered, and that is precisely what makes this conversation urgent. <\/span>Today the Puerto Baru project<\/strong> proposes intervening in the heart of this system through dredging and modifications in a territory whose stability depends on extremely delicate balances. <\/span>Historical evidence demonstrates that even minor alterations to the natural flow of water have caused complete forest collapses in a mere few years. What follows is not merely a technical report, but an X-ray of one of Panama's most important ecosystems and a statement that transcends borders.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Chiriqu\u00ed Mangroves Depend on Natural Water Flow <\/b>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>These ecosystems survive thanks to the balance between tides, nutrient circulation and natural salinity regulation. But satellite studies show something alarming: <\/span>When tidal flow is interrupted by sediment accumulation, water circulation ceases, salinity rises dramatically, and the forest begins to die.<\/strong>

\n<\/span>The Port of Bar\u00fa project threatens this delicate balance through dredging and the modification of natural channels. What may seem like a small alteration can trigger an irreversible ecological collapse. In just a few years, a healthy mangrove can be transformed into a \u201cghost forest.\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Such an extraordinary feature is the height of these mangrove trees, which only exists in a few places on the planet: Gabon, the San Juan River in Colombia, and Panama. This impressive height reveals that we are facing an ancient, stable ecosystem that has been practically untouched for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

A real \u201cAmazon of the Ocean\u201d<\/strong> And just as the Amazon, a 55-million-year-old rainforest, cannot be restored, these giant mangroves cannot be replaced either.\u00a0<\/span>

The Hidden Carbon Beneath the Mangroves\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The most valuable aspect of mangroves isn't always visible; beneath their roots lies a huge natural reserve of carbon accumulated over centuries, even millennia. Over 11 million tonnes of carbon are stored in this area alone, trapped in waterlogged soils and protected by natural processes.<\/span>

\n<\/span>Unfortunately, what has functioned as a climate sink for thousands of years can transform into a carbon bomb if the soil is disturbed by activities such as dredging, causing this balance to collapse.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>The protection of these ecosystems is not just a discussion about conservation. It is also related to the future of <\/span>Sustainable Tourism of Chiriqu\u00ed<\/b>, food safety, the <\/span>Panama Marine Conservation<\/b> and the emergent principles of the <\/span>Rights of Nature<\/b>, which recognise nature as a legal subject.<\/span>
