When a community opposes a project that threatens an ecosystem, the conflict rarely remains confined to territory. It also takes place in language, in the media, in the way it is publicly established what is \u201cprogress\u201d and what is not.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is why, very often, before transforming an ecosystem, industry transforms the narrative surrounding that ecosystem. It redefines it, downplays it, strips it of its value, and in this process, strategies that are now widely recognised globally, such as greenwashing and environmental disinformation, emerge.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is greenwashing?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Greenwashing is a deceptive marketing strategy where companies or industries project a false image of environmental sustainability to generate public trust, attract consumers, or deflect criticism.<\/span><\/p>\n

This happens when ambiguous concepts, images associated with nature, promises of sustainability, or environmental discourse are used. In many cases, the goal is not necessarily to demonstrate that a project does not generate impacts, but rather to implant the idea that these impacts are minor, unavoidable, or even \u201ccompatible\u201d with environmental protection.<\/span><\/p>\n

The problem is that, while the narrative communicates sustainability, ecosystems continue to degrade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Minimise environmental impacts<\/b><\/h2>\n

One of the most frequent strategies consists of publicly downplaying the perception of environmental damage. This is done by presenting impacts as \u201ccontrollable\u201d without sufficient evidence, omitting cumulative risks, making the long-term impact invisible, or by communicating only a portion of the available environmental information.<\/span><\/p>\n

In socio-environmental conflicts, this often leads to a significant disconnect between what communities, scientists, and environmental organisations warn about, and what ultimately reaches public debate. The result is an incomplete conversation, a constant discussion focused on downplaying the impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Portraying the opposition as \u201canti-progress\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n

Another common strategy is to install the idea that those who question industrial projects are \u201cagainst development\u201d. Under this logic, protecting ecosystems is presented as an economic obstacle and not as a legitimate discussion about the type of development a society wants to build.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, the climate crisis has profoundly changed that conversation, with an increasing number of experts, international organisations, and communities arguing that destroying strategic ecosystems can no longer be considered progress if it implies increased climate vulnerability, biodiversity loss, or damage to local livelihoods.<\/span><\/p>\n

The dispute is also cultural<\/b><\/h2>\n

Today, a large part of environmental conflicts no longer take place solely in courts or territories. They also occur in narratives, in the definition of progress, in the information that circulates and in who has the power to publicly install one version of reality.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is why defending ecosystems is not just about protecting biodiversity; it also means defending the right of communities to access transparent information, scientific evidence, and honest public debates.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because when environmental reality is distorted, what is at risk is not just nature, but also a society's ability to consciously decide its future.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
