The industry's dispute over control of the narrative is a strategy to divert the focus of environmental discussion, to confuse and concentrate on disinformation. When the data is inconvenient, the focus is not on debating it in greater depth, but on weakening its impact on public debate.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is exemplified when scientific evidence demonstrates significant risks or impacts, and the response from certain sectors is not necessarily to review or adjust projects. Frequently, the strategy is to sow doubt, discredit the source, and confuse public opinion.<\/span><\/p>\n

This phenomenon is neither new nor isolated, it is part of a global pattern that is repeated in different environmental conflicts. In fact, within the strategic analysis of campaigns linked to the protection of ecosystems, \u201cgreenwashing\u201d is explicitly recognised as a systematic response to social pressure and scientific evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n

To delegitimise science in order to weaken the evidence<\/b><\/h2>\n

One of the first strategies involves questioning the validity of studies by planting the idea that they don't meet sufficient standards, aren't based on formal processes, or lack technical rigour. This type of argument doesn't always aim to open a genuine scientific debate, but rather to generate uncertainty in public opinion.<\/span>

Create a parallel narrative<\/b><\/h2>\n

When evidence does not favour certain interests, an alternative narrative is constructed where projects are presented as sustainable, impacts are minimised, and risks are shown as controlled. This phenomenon is widely known as greenwashing.<\/span><\/p>\n

The aim is not necessarily to deny the problem, but to dilute it by presenting multiple versions of the same reality. This installs the idea that there is no clear truth, only equivalent interpretations. However, in environmental matters, not all claims have the same backing.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, independent research has shown that ecosystems such as those in the Gulf of Chiriqu\u00ed are highly sensitive to interventions like dredging or increased maritime traffic. These activities can significantly alter habitats and affect species that depend on them for survival, as is the case with dolphin populations in the area. The scientific evidence exists; what changes is how it is presented or questioned.<\/span><\/p>\n

The underlying context is the logic that prioritises the economy<\/b><\/h2>\n

To understand why these strategies are repeated, it is necessary to look at the broader context. Since the Industrial Revolution, a way of thinking has been consolidated that prioritises the accumulation of capital over the conservation of ecosystems. Within this framework, nature is understood primarily as a resource available for exploitation.<\/span><\/p>\n

This logic explains why, even in the face of solid evidence of environmental impacts, projects continue to move forward. The challenge is not just technical or environmental, but structural. When the economy is positioned as the absolute priority, nature protection comes to be perceived as an obstacle.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this scenario, disinformation, the discrediting of science, and greenwashing are not anomalies, but tools that allow this model to be sustained. They are mechanisms that facilitate the continuation of projects that would otherwise face greater public resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is truly at stake<\/b><\/h2>\n

The problem, then, is not solely environmental, but also institutional and social. When science is systematically questioned, when critical voices are discredited, and when information is fragmented into contradictory versions, a society's capacity to make informed decisions is weakened.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond any specific project, what is at stake is the way truth is constructed in the public space, and in that context, the key question is not just what is happening, but why confusion is being deliberately generated around it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because when evidence becomes inconvenient, what follows is not always a discussion, many times, it is a strategy.<\/span>
