From the Free Fossil Gran Caribe Network we express our deep concern and <\/span>We reject the attempts at silencing faced by Panamanian organisations. <\/span>Environmental Impact Centre (CIAM), a member of our network, and Adopt a Forest, a <\/span>through legal actions and injunctions including the temporary seizure of <\/span>Accounts and assets.<\/span><\/p>\n

These actions arise in the context of citizen opposition to the Puerto Bar\u00fa project. <\/span>David, Chiriqu\u00ed, which involves activities related to the transport of fossil fuels and has been promoted as part of a logistics route to the Caribbean. The project is situated in an area of extremely high ecological value that is home to 25% of Panama\u2019s mangroves \u2013 marine and coastal ecosystems that are vital for biodiversity, small-scale fishing and protection against extreme weather events. This area has been recognised as a protected area by the Panamanian government since 2007 and is a key site for the conservation of numerous species.<\/span><\/p>\n

The defence of David's mangroves and their function as a natural barrier, a refuge for life <\/span>community-based land and wildlife management has motivated the actions of the organisations affected today. The judicial and financial reprisals are occurring precisely within the framework of that legitimate environmental protection activity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The use of economic precautionary measures against environmental organisations creates a chilling effect that threatens their operations, affects their work teams and puts at risk conservation, education and research projects that are fundamental for the country's communities and ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a regional body driving a just energy transition and the gradual phase-out of L<\/span>Fossil fuels in the Greater Caribbean, we remember that citizen participation, access to justice, and environmental defence are democratic pillars and rights protected by the Panamanian Constitution and by the Escaz\u00fa Agreement, ratified by Panama.<\/span><\/p>\n

We urge the Panamanian State to guarantee that the judicial system is not instrumentalised to harass organisations that legitimately exercise their right to environmental defence. The measures adopted must be evaluated under strict criteria of legality, proportionality, and respect for human rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

We stand in solidarity with CIAM and Adopta Bosque. It is a collective responsibility to sustain and <\/span>protect those who defend the environment. In times of climate crisis, when coastal ecosystems and communities face growing pressures, the work of <\/span>environmental organisations it is more urgent than ever.<\/span><\/p>\n
