In recent days, environmental organisations in Latin America have publicly expressed their concern over the legal actions taken against the Environmental Advocacy Centre (CIAM) and Adopta Bosque Panam\u00e1, in the context of their environmental defence work linked to the Puerto Bar\u00fa project. The organisations <\/span>CIAM<\/b> y <\/span>Adopt a Wood<\/b> they face lawsuits, freezing of bank accounts and seizure of assets after legally challenging the Puerto Bar\u00fa project in David, Chiriqu\u00ed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The news was covered by the newspaper <\/span>The Century<\/span><\/i><\/a>, where it is reported that the Escaz\u00fa Now Regional Network denounced the seizures against these organisations, reminding that environmental defence and citizen participation are protected by international instruments and by the Panamanian Constitution.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>A regional backing<\/b>
\n<\/b>The Escaz\u00fa Now Regional Network and the network <\/span>Climate Action Network Latin America (CANLA)<\/b>, Latin American node of <\/span>Climate Action Network<\/span><\/i>, expressed their concern over the precautionary measures imposed. The Network recalled that Panama has undertaken clear international commitments to: guarantee access to information, protect public participation and defend environmental defenders.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>A regional alert urging the Judiciary, the Public Prosecutor's Office and the competent authorities to evaluate the legality and proportionality of the measures adopted.<\/span><\/p>\n

This case is not limited to two organisations; it sets a precedent for how those who exercise the right to question projects that may cause irreversible environmental impacts are treated.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>A precedent that matters<\/b>
\n<\/b>Environmental advocacy, the reporting of potential impacts and citizen participation in matters of public interest are not illegitimate acts. They are essential pillars of a democratic state.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is how the Escaz\u00fa Now Network remembered it: these guarantees are protected by the Constitution of Panama and by international agreements signed by the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

Measures of asset seizure and judicial pressure against civil society organisations not only affect their operational functioning, they send a worrying signal regarding civic space and freedom of participation.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/b>We have the right to defend ourselves<\/b>
\n<\/span>Defending the territory is not a confrontation, it is a responsibility. It is exercising the right to participate, to inform and to demand transparency in decisions that affect common goods.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a country that has ratified the Escaz\u00fa Agreement and has undertaken international commitments on environmental and climate matters, the standard must be clear: The defence of the environment must be protected, not punished.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
