We do not speak from emotion; we speak from technical evidence. The Puerto Bar\u00fa project aims to install a multipurpose port within one of the most extensive and ecologically relevant mangrove systems in Panama: the mangroves of David, in the Gulf of Chiriqu\u00ed.<\/p>\n

An independent analysis carried out by the US firm <\/span>Lynker<\/b>, which specialises in hydrodynamic modelling and scientific consultancy for the US government, reviewed the project's Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and found significant technical inconsistencies.<\/span><\/p>\n

These are 9<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0technical reasons<\/b> to question the Puerto Bar\u00fa project.<\/span><\/h2>\n

1.- The project will be built in an area of mangrove forest protected since 2007 by Municipal Decree of David, Chiriqu\u00ed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2.- Massive dredging is required in a shallow estuary (a naturally shallow area). <\/span><\/p>\n

The natural depth of the site is up to 2 metres at low tide, and to allow vessels to enter it would be necessary to dredge to a depth of 11-12 metres. This is the equivalent of a 3-storey building.<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. There is a high risk of fine sediment dispersion from dredging.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \"\"<\/p>\n

    Due to the sea current, there is a risk that the dredging sediments will lead to the suffocation of mangroves and damage to reefs in the marine system of the Gulf of Chiriqu\u00ed, which includes protected areas of international significance.<\/span><\/p>\n

    4. The areas near the proposed shipping routes are home to animal species such as humpback whales, dolphins, sharks and endangered sea turtles.<\/span><\/p>\n

    5. The mitigation strategies proposed by Puerto Bar\u00fa do not appear to be adequate or supported by the available scientific evidence, particularly those related to dredging operations.<\/span><\/p>\n

    6. The project presents a risk of accidental spillage of pollutants from maritime traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n

    7 . The impact of dredging and its sediments can:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Reducing sunlight, limiting photosynthesis and mangrove growth.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Blocking the aerial roots, affecting their respiration and causing tree death.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Burying seedlings, preventing the natural regeneration of the ecosystem.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Alter the habitat, affecting fish, crustaceans and associated birds.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Modifying salinity, generating ecological stress and loss of biodiversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      8. Puerto Bar\u00fa does not apply lessons from international experiences<\/span><\/p>\n

      \"\"<\/p>\n

      A similar study in India (Azeez et al., 2022) concluded that:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \u2013 The dredged material must be deposited 18\u201320 km out to sea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      - In waters at least 20 metres deep.<\/span><\/p>\n

      \u2013 To prevent sediments from flowing back into sensitive ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\n

      In contrast, the Puerto Bar\u00fa project proposes depositing the sediments within the wetlands of the protected area, not in the open sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. The mitigation measures proposed in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for Puerto Bar\u00fa to minimise the impacts of sediment dispersion are insufficient.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
