Civil society organisations have reported to the media that the developer of the Puerto Bar\u00fa project, the US investment firm Ocean Pacific Financial Services, has initiated civil proceedings to request the freezing of accounts and assets belonging to Adopta Bosque Panam\u00e1 and the Environmental Advocacy Centre (CIAM).<\/p>\n

This preventive seizure of accounts, assets and property is not the result of a conviction or a sanction, but it has immediate and serious effects. It paralyses the operations of our organisations, which maintain active processes in conservation, scientific research and the defence of the right to a healthy environment, and freezes the work of teams that support communities and ecosystems at risk.<\/p>\n

This is a sensitive matter that should alert the public about how the legal system is being used to curb public participation and the defence of the country's natural heritage.<\/p>\n

Environment Minister Juan Carlos Navarro expressed concern over the decision by the developer of the Puerto Bar\u00fa project regarding environmental organisations in Panama, an action which, in his view, does not contribute to the national dialogue on projects with an environmental impact.<\/p>\n
