They also act as a natural defence. They help to buffer floods, strong winds, and other extreme events that affect coastal communities.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The mangroves of Chiriqu\u00ed are important; they capture CO\u2082 and act as a nursery \ud83d\udc1f\ud83c\udf31, and protect #NoAPuertoBar\u00fa\" width=\"422\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GUXebfmfmWc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On the coasts of Chiriqu\u00ed, mangroves sustain living ecosystems, local economies, and entire generations that depend on artisanal fishing, shellfish, and ecotourism.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2007, teachers and students have been looking after these mangroves as part of their identity and their future.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udccd Chiriqu\u00ed is home to 25% of Panama\u2019s mangrove forests.<br \/>\nIn David, Chiriqu\u00ed, the mangroves have been a protected area since 2007 under Municipal Agreement 021.<br \/>\nThere are other sites where port infrastructure can be developed without destroying mangroves.
