{"id":1230,"date":"2026-01-08T14:56:57","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T14:56:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/?p=1230"},"modified":"2026-01-15T14:21:55","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T14:21:55","slug":"puerto-baru-development-or-whim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noapuertobaru.com\/en\/articles-2\/puerto-baru-development-or-whim\/","title":{"rendered":"Puerto Bar\u00fa: development or whim?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the debate on port development in Chiriqu\u00ed, one question becomes inevitable<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Does it make sense to build two large-scale ports so close to each other?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Puerto Bar\u00fa project continues to generate concern over its impact on the mangroves of David, <\/span><b>Puerto Armuelles is advancing as a real, technically and environmentally more responsible alternative<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with institutional backing and a significant degree of progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Puerto Armuelles: a recognised priority<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent statements, the President of Panama, <\/span><b>Jos\u00e9 Ra\u00fal Mulino<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, made it clear that <\/span><b>Puerto Armuelles <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a priority on its agenda, and it also highlights that it is 63 % ahead of schedule.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Puerto Armuelles is moving forward with 63%. Why insist on Puerto Bar\u00fa and destroy mangroves?\ud83c\udf31 #NoAPuertoBar\u00fa\" width=\"422\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sBfxc5ANFgM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puerto Armuelles is therefore being considered as a political and strategic decision to boost port infrastructure where favourable conditions, operational experience and lower environmental risk already exist.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Two ports so close to each other?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real McCoy <\/span><b>Lynker Technical Report<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, drawn up to assess alternatives to Puerto Bar\u00fa, provides a key piece of information for understanding the scale of the territorial debate:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPuerto Armuelles is situated in the Chiriqu\u00ed region, in the southwest of Panama, about <\/span><b>80 km west of David and the proposed site of Puerto Bar\u00fa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puerto Armuelles is situated in the Chiriqu\u00ed region, in south-western Panama, some 80 km west of David and the proposed site of Puerto Bar\u00fa (Figure 1-1). This study focuses on key aspects of the road networks and infrastructure<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Report <i>Lynker, \u201cPanama: An alternative to Puerto Bar\u00fa \u2013 Puerto Armuelles\u201d, 6 February 2025, p. 2.<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eighty kilometres within the same province does not represent an insurmountable distance from a logistical or economic point of view; moreover, it offers significant comparative advantages: it has existing infrastructure, a deep draught, a direct link to the Pan-American Highway and avoids any impact on protected mangroves.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Against this background, a legitimate question arises:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>why insist on a second port that involves greater environmental costs when there is already an advanced and functional alternative?<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Progress with nature, not at its expense<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puerto Armuelles will generate the same benefits as Puerto Bar\u00fa: jobs, investment and progress for Panama, without encroaching on a protected mangrove area. Unlike Puerto Bar\u00fa, its development does not rely on extensive dredging or the disruption of ecosystems that are key to coastal protection and biodiversity in Chiriqu\u00ed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panama needs development. Chiriqu\u00ed needs opportunities. But progress cannot be built by sacrificing ecosystems that sustain life and the local economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The path has been laid out.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Let\u2019s choose progress alongside nature.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let us not allow unnecessary decisions to compromise the mangroves of David nor the resilience of the Panamanian coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panama can grow in harmony with nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>En el debate sobre el desarrollo portuario en Chiriqu\u00ed, una pregunta se vuelve inevitable \u00bfTiene sentido construir dos puertos de gran escala tan cerca uno del otro?
