It was not just another excursion. They are natural infrastructure, an economic livelihood and a protective barrier for thousands of people in Panama.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Mangroves as a natural barrier: when nature protects<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt sounds unbelievable,\u201d says Luis, \u201cbut even though it might not be the most comfortable place, it's a place rich in biodiversity.\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That \u201cinconvenience\u201d is, precisely, part of their strength. Mangroves act as a natural barrier against storms, storm surges and extreme weather events. Their roots reduce wave energy, stabilise the soil and lessen coastal erosion. Wherever there are mangroves, coastal communities are better protected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a country like Panama, this ecosystem function is not symbolic: it is strategic. Destroying mangroves means not only losing biodiversity, but also weakening a natural defence that cannot be replaced by artificial infrastructure without enormous environmental, economic and social costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Biodiversity that sustains life and the economy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luis also highlights something key: the unique structure of this ecosystem. Mangroves are nurseries of marine life. In them, fish, crustaceans and molluscs reproduce, which later sustain the food security of many communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But its value doesn't end there. As Jenny remembers:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI have learned that many people depend on these activities, such as ecotourism, because they generate income for their households.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Panama and tourism: a direct relationship with nature<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panama is a country deeply dependent on the services sector, and tourism represents a central part of its economy. A large part of that tourist appeal is based on healthy ecosystems: mangroves, reefs, whales, dolphins, national parks and protected areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mangrove-based ecotourism, fauna watching, kayak tours, community tourism, and environmental education not only generate income, but also distribute benefits locally, strengthening family economies and promoting long-term conservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the integrity of these ecosystems is compromised, not only is biodiversity put at risk, but also a source of employment, identity and development for coastal communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Look to understand, understand to defend<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact that Jenny and Luis describe is no accident. It is what happens when you know the territory from the inside. When you navigate the mangrove, when you observe its life, when you understand its function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These kinds of testimonials are crucial because they connect science, experience and the future. They remind us that decisions regarding the land are not abstract: they affect systems that protect, feed and sustain an entire country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defending the mangroves of David is not just an environmental cause.
