Terrorising, exhausting and silencing those who defend the environment<\/b><\/h3>\n

This is how SLAPP lawsuits operate: strategic lawsuits against public participation that are growing worldwide as a tool for legal intimidation. Behind rhetoric about \u201cprogress\u201d or \u201csustainable development\u201d, corporations use the judicial system to silence criticism and wear down communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Panama, the conflict over <\/span>Puerto Baru<\/b> evidences it. In August 2025, the organisations <\/span>Adopt a Wood<\/b> y <\/span>CIAM Panama<\/b> they were notified on social media that they were facing complaints for \u201cslander\u201d and \u201ccrimes against the national economy\u201d. Their \u201ccrime\u201d? Questioning a port project that threatens the <\/span>Gulf of Chiriqu\u00ed mangroves<\/b>, one of the most important ecosystems for the <\/span>marine biodiversity<\/b> And the <\/span>coastal protection<\/b> of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

When defending nature becomes a legal risk<\/b><\/h3>\n

These demands are not seeking justice, but <\/span>intimidate, exhaust and silence<\/b>. They are a form of censorship that erodes democracy and weakens the citizen's right to participate in environmental decisions. By attacking those who protect ecosystems, the impunity of those who destroy them is protected.<\/span><\/p>\n

The criminalisation of environmental defence translates into <\/span>emotional stress, financial strain and reputational damage<\/b> for community organisations and leaders. But it also puts Panama's international credibility at stake, a country that has legally recognised the <\/span>Rights of Nature<\/b>, but which allows those who defend them to be accused.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let's put a stop to environmental criminalisation<\/b><\/h3>\n

Defending nature shouldn't be a risk. Demanding transparency and justice is an essential part of a living democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n
