UNESCO asks Panama to review the Baru port project due to possible impacts on Coiba National Park

UNESCO pide a Panamá revisar el proyecto portuario de Puerto Barú por posibles impactos en el Parque Nacional Coiba image

The World Heritage Committee requested that the Panamanian government assess the project’s impact on Coiba National Park before making decisions that could be difficult to reverse.

The mangroves of the Gulf of Chiriquí are a vital area for sharks and rays.

  •  Humpback whale calves use these channels as a refuge.
  • Sharks and rays find breeding grounds here.
  •  Many species depend on this ecosystem to survive.

Mangroves connect life on land with life in the ocean.

What’s the concern?

That sediment from the construction project could be carried out to sea… nearing Coiba Island. The port’s construction could cause irreversible damage to one of the largest mangrove forests in Latin America.

  • Panama must evaluate the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for Puerto Barú.
  • Panama must submit a report to the Committee on the state of conservation and management.
  • The Committee will evaluate this report, which will influence future decisions regarding conservation and international recognition.

Deadline: December 1, 2026

The decisions made today can shape the future of this natural heritage. 🌎💚
